Jersey photographer: an extended family winter photoshoot

As a Jersey based photographer I love an extended family photoshoot! Mums and dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, teenagers, babies – the more the merrier! This is what childhood memories are made up of and an extended family photoshoot is a very special way to preserve those memories.

They make a heartfelt gift for grandparents for an anniversary or to celebrate a big family gathering from across the globe, and the added bonus of them is that each family involved gets their own mini photoshoot too. So they work out pretty good value! With my top packages including professional prints, everyone gets a little keepsake too.

An extended family photoshoot in Jersey is a bit more structured than my standard family photoshoots which are more organic. For an extended family I will ask for a shot list, which I will work my way through before letting the session flow more freely. I will also do a mini photoshoot of each individual family, which means you get a family photo, photos of the kids together, and a portrait of each child. The sessions are super relaxed, so that everyone feels comfortable to be themselves.

This is the second time I have had the opportunity to photograph the De Gruchy family and each time has been a blast! Their love for one another is palpable and they know how to bring giggles and energy to the session. This photoshoot was taken on a bitterly cold day in December, and they brought all the warmth :-) I also loved their choice of colours and styling, which is not easily done with a large group, so kindly asked them if I could share their session as an inspiration to others.

“We ended 2024 with Rachel’s last photoshoot as a large, multigenerational family of 14 people. This was the second time we’ve had family photos with Rachel, the first being five years ago which was the last time we had an important, much missed part of our lovely family back over with us from Australia. As they were here again and the last session was so successful we were unanimous that we would like updated photos of the gang.
Rachel is incredible from the moment you start booking with ideas, locations, back up dates and suggestions. She is keen to get to know the dynamics of the group, even memorising everyone’s names which in our case was no mean feat with 14 people and how they all interconnect.
